It is a common myth that it takes 21 days to form a habit. Studies have shown that it actually takes more than two months of constant attention and repetition to form a habit. With a consistent effort, you can successfully develop habits that can lead to a healthier lifestyle. There is no better time than the New Year to start developing new habits that can benefit your health.
Here are some mouth-healthy habits that you can begin developing today!
Brush your teeth twice a day. This habit may seem easy, but you may be surprised how often people skip brushing their teeth. Our busy schedules can get in the way of dental hygiene, but every time that you skip brushing, you are allowing plaque and tartar to build up on your teeth. Try to remember to brush twice a day, each and every day.
Visit the Dentist twice per year. Visiting the dentist regularly is important so that any dental health concerns can be created proactively. The dentist can spot problems before they develop into more serious issues.
Floss your teeth every day. Flossing is also an essential part of oral hygiene. If you don’t floss, you are failing to clean as much as 40% of your tooth’s surface.
Drink less soda. Quitting anything cold turkey can be difficult, but we recommend that you cut back on your soda intake as much as possible. Soda is a cavity’s best friend. The high acidity and sugar content of soda wreaks havoc on teeth as well as causing other health concerns as well.
To help you stick with your New Year’s resolutions, consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member to keep you accountable on your goals. Check in every week to go over your progress and reestablish new goals. To schedule your next appointment today, we invite you to call our office at Scott M. Healey Dentistry.
